Latinos Preparados Goals and Activities
- Increase preparedness in Spanish speaking community
- Emphasizing that disaster preparedness does not have to cost money. Families without any savings can still reduce damage and suffering by eliminating home hazards, making a family plan, talking with neighbors, childcare centers, etc.
- Train bi-lingual volunteers to teach first aid and disaster preparedness in Spanish
- Coordinating and sponsoring Red Cross and related courses in Spanish on disaster preparedness, first aid and community health
- Reduce the obstacles to training for the low income Spanish speaking population
- Offering abbreviated, free classes in Spanish on first aid and disaster preparedness in locations that are familiar and convenient such as churches, adult schools, service agencies, and homes
- Disseminate information to the Spanish speaking public through various channels
- Distributing free written information to various locations that are frequented by the Spanish speaking community
- Writing PSA's on preparedness and safety and sending them to radio and press
- Information booths at public events such as health fairs and cultural celebrations
- Maintaining a voice mail telephone number where the public can leave messages or request information and classes
- Participation in Spanish radio talk shows on stations KLOK, KNTA, KIQI, and KAZA.
- Appearances on Spanish Television Channels 48 and 14 to promote the program and give information on EQ preparedness, First Aid, Heimlich Maneuver, etc.
- Articles in Spanish & English press including El Observador, La Oferta, the Mercury
- News, the Gilroy Post, CADRE Newsletter, and the Volunteer Spirit Newsletter.
- Producing informational audio tapes in Spanish for use by people who cannot read and people who are too busy to read
- Strengthen the relationship between the Hispanic Community and the American Red Cross Participating jointly in public events such as: The annual CPR Saturday event, the Mexican Independence Day Parade, The Annual Channel 48 Fiesta Internacional, and the Cinco de Mayo Parade
