Emergency outdoor cooking: 10 stoves to compare

Keep no-cook food first. If you have a safe outdoor cooking space and can use a stove correctly, choose a familiar fuel system with stable pot support. A tiny burner advertised as a lamp should not be assumed suitable for cooking, heating a room or use inside a shelter.

Make the right comparison

What to check before spending money

  • Confirm that your fuel, burner and cookware are compatible.
  • Plan safe outdoor siting and secure fuel storage before purchasing.
  • Check controls, stability, wind restrictions and access to replacement seals or parts.
  • Consider whether a hot meal is worth the fuel and water when a ready-to-eat meal is available.

Practise before you need it

Learn the manufacturer's full lighting, shutdown and cooling procedure in a safe outdoor setting. Test one familiar meal and record the fuel needed. Repack only when everything is cool.

Record where the equipment is kept, who can use it and when it next needs checking. Keep essential instructions on paper or saved offline. A useful item you understand is worth more than a bag of unfamiliar gadgets.

Sources and selection method

We selected recognisable, documented products to illustrate practical choices and tradeoffs. Manufacturer material confirms that a model is described or listed; it is commercial evidence, not independent proof of performance. The range is not exhaustive, and some topics currently contain several products from the same maker. We have not tested these products.

Model names and pages were checked during research on 2026-08-28. Availability is not guaranteed. No manufacturer quotation, customer star rating or old shop review has been presented as our own assessment.
