Wind-up and emergency radios: 10 to compare

A radio can provide another way to receive information when mobile data is unavailable. The right receiver depends on local broadcasts. A US weather-alert radio is not automatically useful in Britain or another country, and a hand crank is a backup energy source, not unlimited power.

Make the right comparison

What to check before spending money

  • Find actual local stations and the bands they use before choosing a receiver.
  • Distinguish broadcast reception from two-way communication. These are not rescue transmitters.
  • Check accessible tuning, speaker volume, headphone support and written operating instructions.
  • Keep normal batteries or a charging plan as appropriate; test any crank function before relying on it.
  • If you arrived from an old antenna listing, check the receiver's documented bands and accessory connections. An antenna sold for one radio is not automatically compatible with another.

Practise before you need it

Write down two local stations and tune them in at home and at your planned meeting place. Test reception without Wi-Fi. Keep a paper note of controls and your next battery check.

Record where the equipment is kept, who can use it and when it next needs checking. Keep essential instructions on paper or saved offline. A useful item you understand is worth more than a bag of unfamiliar gadgets.

Sources and selection method

We selected recognisable, documented products to illustrate practical choices and tradeoffs. Manufacturer material confirms that a model is described or listed; it is commercial evidence, not independent proof of performance. The range is not exhaustive, and some topics currently contain several products from the same maker. We have not tested these products.

Model names and pages were checked during research on 2026-08-28. Availability is not guaranteed. No manufacturer quotation, customer star rating or old shop review has been presented as our own assessment.

Government sources are guidance to evaluate alongside the hazard, location and evidence. This does not mean ignoring verified live warnings, lawful emergency orders or qualified medical instructions. Read our source standards.
