Choose tasks before tools
A small pair of scissors, a suitable screwdriver or a familiar multi-tool may cover minor repairs. A whistle can attract attention without exhausting your voice. Repair tape may fix a non-critical fabric tear. Keep the purpose of each item clear, and consider whether a simpler item already at home does the same job.
Keep dangerous repairs out of scope
A pocket tool is not suitable for live electrical work, damaged gas pipes, structural repairs or cutting unstable trees. Do not dig near unknown buried services. With damaged infrastructure, withdrawal and qualified help are often the right response. Avoid turning an improvised repair into another emergency.
